ORAL HEALTH MYTHS AND FACTS

BRUSHING AND FLOSSING MAKES BLEEDING GUMS WORSE.

If your gums are bleeding, it would seem logical that you would leave them alone until they heal. However, when it comes to your gums, the opposite is true. Bleeding gums are a sign that plaque and bacteria have accumulated along your gumline causing inflammation. You need to brush and floss to remove the debris to allow the tissues to heal. Brushing twice daily and flossing once a day is recommended.
Another culprit to inflamed tissues may be calculus build up also knowns as tartar (hardened plaque). This can not be removed by brushing and flossing. The only way tartar can be removed, is with the use of dental scalers. Your hygienist “scrapes” the hardened plaque off your teeth, along the gumline and under your gums allowing the tissues to heal. For most adults, this accumulated every 3 months so it’s important to see your dental professional regularly to maintain your oral health.

TOOTH LOSS IS A PART OF AGING

Tooth loss is NOT inevitable!
Tooth loss is caused by PERIODONTAL DISEASE.
PERIODONTAL DISEASE-    a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and bone that supports the teeth. . Microorganisms, such as bacteria, stick to the surface of the tooth and multiply - an overactive immune system reacts with inflammation. Gums become swollen, red and bleed frequently, especially with brushing and flossing and teeth become loose.
CAUSES OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE:
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Not seeing your dental professional regularly
  • Smoking
  • Genetics
  • Diabetes
  • Medications

BABY TEETH ARE NOT IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY WILL JUST FALL OUT.

Baby teeth play a significant role. They facilitate speech, nutrition and preserve space in the jaw for permanent teeth. Poor oral hygiene may cause pain, infection, and low self esteem for your child.
Establishing healthy dental habits from an early age can set your child up for a lifetime of good oral health. Brushing after breakfast and before bed, limit the frequency of sugar intake, and only send your baby to bed with a bottle of water. Juice and milk may cause decay if the sugars sit on your child’s teeth all night.

IF MY TEETH DON’T HURT, I DON’T NEED TO SEE A DENTIST REGULARLY

-Some cavities may not cause any pain until they have become very large.
-Periodontal disease generally has no symptoms until it’s too late.
Dental x-rays are an important diagnostic tool as they reveal decay that may be hiding in between teeth as well as bone levels.

AN ASPIRIN DIRECTLY ON A TOOTH WILL RELIEVE PAIN

You wouldn’t put an aspirin directly on your forehead for a headache would you?
The only effective way to take one is to swallow it. It enters the bloodstream and travels through your body.
It can also cause an acidic burn to your lips and gums
If you have a problem, see the dentist.

WHITENING PRODUCTS WEAKEN ENAMEL

Whitening your teeth is harmless if used as directed. It only removes stains from the teeth, not enamel.
Too much whitening may cause temporary tooth sensitivity.
